I have come to realise that complete acceptance of who I am at all stages of my life gives me inner strength, contentment and a certain type of personal power.
5 years ago I was a crazy, free spirited party girl who would drink to get wasted, eat everything in sight and have no respect for myself or my body. People viewed me as strong and exciting and the friend who would always be up for anything! Now I have stopped drinking and partying and at times can be labelled as boring or the ‘un-cool’ new Des. What some may fail to realise is that by choosing to now respect my body and health, does not make me any different. I am still the same crazy, free spirit who is always excited about life and up for anything although now I am in bed at a reasonable hour, I ensure I put good food fuel into my body, I have new interests that nourish my soul and most importantly I have a new respect and love for myself.
Being a strong person is not defined by how well you fit into society, by how much you drink, how much you ignore your body and push through pain or illness or by how much you follow the mainstream crowd. In my eyes, being strong is having the strength to choose to live a life that is authentic, real and true to yourself! It is having the strength to say no to social pressures and make good decisions for yourself, for your body and health. This is true strength….
For those of you lovely ladies who have gone through challenges in your life and have grown from the experience, be proud of who you are and who you have become! Show gratitude for what you have learnt, appreciate your inner strength, stand strong in your personal power and do not be dis-heartened by comments or stereotype pressures from the outside world! It is far “cooler” to stand strong in your personal power and have respect for yourself no matter what your choices are! Most importantly have the courage to accept the new, brilliant YOU whoever that may be!
